PHIL LESH & FRIENDS (GDCD 4401)

Love Will See You Through (Highlights, Volume One)

Press Release
Deep into disc two of Love Will See You Through - the first release of live recordings from the ever-changing musical repertory company known as Phil Lesh & Friends -- the band emerges from a jam into "New Potato Caboose," written by Lesh and the late Bobby Petersen in 1968, and not performed since 1969. The revival of long-lost treasures from the Grateful Dead repertoire has been a hallmark of the Phil & Friends shows, as has been the reinterpretation and reinvention of some of the most familiar tunes in the Dead's songbook.
For Lesh, "The range of the music has expanded, because I've had the opportunity to explore this familiar material in the company of some great musicians who are coming to it with a different perspective." In addition to his regular guitar mate Steve Kimock, the lineup of Love Will See You Through features the great Jorma Kaukonen (of Hot Tuna/Jefferson Airplane fame) on guitar; Pete Sears (also of Hot Tuna) on keyboards; Prairie Prince (The Tubes, Todd Rundgren,) on drums; and two of the Ray Area's most talented and versatile singers, Caitlin Cornwell and Zoe Ellis.
Jorma takes to songs associated with Jerry Garcia ("Friend of the Devil," "Dupree's Diamond Blues") and Pigpen ("Mr. Charlie," "Big Boss Man") as though he'd been born to sing them, and leads the band through a powerful version of one of his own best songs, "Good Shepherd." And Phil takes the lead on the Garcia/Hunter tunes "Mississipi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo" and "Franklin's Tower," as well as the beautiful Robbie Robertson song, "Broken Arrow."
Phil intends this to be just the first in "Phil Lesh & Friends" releases. We've got a lot to look forward to.
"Love Will See You Through" will be available October 26, 1999 at record stores everywhere, on Grateful Dead Records (distributed by Arista) at $20.98 retail, or from Grateful Dead Merchandising at 1-800-225-33Z3.
