DeadBase XI Hardcover Is Here (Really)

(updated12/17//99)

BSP Frieght just left, and I am heading back to the shipping room to catch up on backorders of the hardcover edition. Gonna work like a madman to get as many out today as possible. More later. -John

DeadBase XI Paperback Is Here (Really)

Yes, it is here, and I have shipped all paperback copies ordered as of Wednesday the 17th.
As fate would have it (and completely in keeping with the numerous delays that have plagued this job at the printers) it snowed last night in Cornish for the first time of the season. The skiers among us have been cursing the warm weather and dry skies until now when we got a healthy dusting of snow as frosting over an icy mix. I hope our driver appreciates a challenge. More to come when I finish unloading.

DeadBase XI Hardcover On Its Way

The printers were able to improve significantly on their most recent pessimistic ship date for the hardcover edition. I now expect them on Wednesday, or maybe even Tuesday.

DeadBase XI Paperback Is Here

Well, it will be within the hour or so. I will post here again once the books are actually unloaded.

DeadBase XI Hardcover Delayed Again

The printers had yet another setback with the hardcover edition. The machine which reinforces the library bindings on the casebound books broke just as our job got to it. They are trying to get the job finished as soon as possible, but have only promised to ship by Monday. It is looking very doubtful that they will arrive to most customers until just after Christmas.

DeadBase XI Paperback On Its Way

(updated12/03//99)
Our printers informed us today that they have loaded the paperback copies of DeadBase XI onto a tractor trailer today, and that they are officially on its way to beautiful Cornish, NH. We expect to take delivery in the middle of next week.
Unfortunately the hardcover copies will not be ready for a few more days. Both editions were delayed by equipment problems at the printers, and the casebound books obviously take longer to bind.
We still expect ship all books within 48 hours of receiving them, and that most orders will arrive in time for Christmas.

Feedback Winners

(updated 11/09/99)
Thanks to all respondant to our most recent round of surveys. We have finally chosen (randomly) our lucky recipients of free copies of DeadBase XI. The Garcia Feedback winners are: Christopher Jones and Jeremy Norris. The Furthur Feedback winners are: Colin Speer and Timothy Ryan.

A New Look For The Tape du Jour

(updated 11/07/99)

This new feature has finally been scripted (as was the original intent). A new listing is automatically generated for each day, and users can also look at the suggestions for the the previous and subsequent days.
The suggestions are based on several competing factors. The Feedback rankings from DeadBase X are supplemented by considerations of special anniversaries (10th, 25th, etc.), and of diversity so there is usually some variety in the years listened to within a given week.
This is the second implementation of this new feature; it may well change again. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Another New Release From Grateful Dead Records

(updated 11/06/99)

The Long Awaited Boxed Set Goes On Sale on November 9th

So Many Roads (1965-1995) - Grateful Dead - If any canon of work in the Rock genre ever merited a boxed set, it surely is the Grateful Dead's. What could have easily been a ten-cd (or even thirty-one!) set has been distilled down to five. The stories of the cuts and compromises which had to be made are heart-wrenching (a version of Passenger, for instance), but the final product is perhaps keener for them. In a little over six hours of music we are escorted on a lightning tour through three decades of musical exploration, providing an effective overview that should be a good introduction to the neophyte. It's appeal to the seasoned Deadhead will come from a handful of rare material (a show from 1968 I had not heard, and some studio sessions), the canny selections from mssrs. Gans, Jackson, and Silberman, and from the book included. I will try to get a forum set up shortly for opinions on the boxed set.

DeadBase XI Goes On Sale

(updated11/03//99)
We still do not know if DeadBase XI will arrive in time for the holidays (the printers have promised to deliver it the second week in December) but we are now officially taking advance orders.
In order to receive the lowest possible edition number, we will charge your credit card when you place your order. If you do not care about the edition number, please note this on your order, and we will not charge your card until the books are ready to ship.

DeadBase incoming e-mail, including orders may be lost

We noticed that our email was unusually slow, and that we received no orders today. Our ISP had some sporadic problems with their primary and backup mail servers and it is possible that incoming e-mail was lost. If you sent us e-mail, or placed an order with us (even if you received a confirmation) between 8AM est on Tuesday, and 8AM est on Wednesday, please resubmit it.
Our ISP assures us that the problem has been found, and solved, and that they do not expect a repeat. We apologize for any inconvenience.

New Releases From Grateful Dead Records

The fine folks over at Grateful Dead Records have been obviously been busy of late. Over the past week they have released two fine recordings.
Love Will See You Through - Phil Lesh & Friends - This is the first release in what is expected to be an extensive selection of recordings from Phil's collaborative solo efforts. Jorma Kaukonen is an obvious choice for such a collaboration, and the match works wonderfully. The brawn and beauty opening duet of Dancin and Broken Arrow is mirrored, and surpassed on the second cd by Good Shepherd, and the mammoth jams surrounding New Potato and St. Stephen.
Dick's Picks, Volume 15 - Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ • September 3,1977 - This 3-cd-set from this classic show features an extra bassy mix that rattles my inadequate sound system. Is yours up to the test?

DeadBase e-mail Reinvented

(updated 10/29/99)

The DeadBase e-mail list is dead...
Long live the DeadBase e-mail list!

We have just installed a new e-mail system at our website, so this is a good time to purge the 15% of addresses who bounce and those who are no longer interested (we have no desire to spam). Accordingly, we are starting the mailing lists from scratch. Even if you had previously subscribed, you will need to do so again, if you want to receive e-mail from us.
This new system should be more convenient thanks to several new features:
• Users can subscribe directly and immediately to a list. Previously we did it by hand periodically.
• Users can unsubscribe directly and immediately. A custom link for this purpose will be appended to every message we send.
• There are two mailing lists to choose from:
All The News - this list will be notified every time an addition is made to this page (What's New). We expect this to average one to two messages a week.
Major News Only - this list will only be used for more important breaking news. We expect this to average one or two messages a month. Any news sent to this list will also be sent to the All The News list
• No longer will there be the risk that we might accidentally broadcast your address to others on the list.
Our initial testing indicates that the system is working well, thus far. The only caveat we have so far is that there may be problems with the system once we approach the 1,600 addresses now in the list being retired.
In order to keep the list clean of old addresses, users will be asked to re-subscribe every year or so. They will each be notified when it is time for them to do so again.

A New Feature Has Been Added

We are pleased to announce the first brand-new feature to this site in quite a while. This is a rotating list of suggestions of tapes to listen to for specific days. Unfortunately, we did not receive enough responses to include the Bobby FeedBack in Deadbase XI (there were 59 at the time of publication; we needed at least 100 to have enough data to work with). We will keep this survey up for a while, and post the results on this site.

What's Not In DeadBase XI?

Unfortunately, the DeadBase archives have become too large to fit into a single edition. As has been our tradition for a while now, we have rotated features out in order to make space for others. This time around we have benched our Feedback and Deadhead Surveys as well as the popular Tape Timings chapter. The other major asset to DeadBase X, not in the future edition is DeadBase '95 with its intensive look into the final year of the Grateful Dead including complete reviews and timings, and extensive photographs and survey results. Over a third of the book has been replaced.
We hope to continue publishing so that restore and we can build on displaced features, as well as introducing new ones. The Grateful Dead canon is enormous, and much work remains to be done unlocking its mysteries and treasures.
We will post more information on this new volume as soon as John has had the time to catch up on everything that fell by the wayside while he was pulling those all-nighters to meet the deadline at the printers.
When we have a delivery date for DeadBase XI, we will post order information here

Various And Sundry Items

Surveys Are Pulled

The Garcia and Further Surveys has been pulled from this site, and the results are undergoing intense analysis for inclusion in the GarciaBase section of DeadBase XI. Our heartfelt thanks to all those who participated.

Desperately Seeking Bobby (data)

We are still need another 40 or so responses to use this survey in DeadBase XI. We really want Bobby to have his due, so we are drastically upping the ante yet again: If we get enough responses (100+) in the alotted time (by Tuesday afternoon), we will give away one copy for every 10 Bobby Feedbacks completed! (Yes, that is right: 10% of respondants could receive a free copy of DeadBase XI!) So, swing on by soon, and fill out this one too, please. Bobby FeedBack

Phil 'n' Dylan Tickets are all on Sale

While we were sleeping (actually, while John was neck deep in DeadBase XI) the rest of the tour went on sale at GDTS TOO. At this time, tickets were still available for: Milwaukee, WI, Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA, New Haven, CT.

Last Call on Jerry Garcia Band Feedback

(updated 9/20//99)
The Jerry Garcia Survey will be pulled and compiled on 9/22. So if you still want to contribute, you should do so posthaste. The good news is that we already have enough replies to guarantee its inclusion in DeadBase XI.
The Furthur Survey will be the next to be pulled, most likely on Friday. We almost have enough replies for this survey to be included also, and you might be the one to put it over the top! Furthur FeedBack
The Bob Weir Survey needs you! Because it was the third survey to be posted, it is lagging far behind the other two in the number of responses. We need to have enough data before next Monday for this survey to make it into DeadBase XI. We feel strongly that Bob has earned his Feedback so we are desparate to make that goal. Accordingly, we are drastically upping the number of free copies of DeadBase XI we will give away to randomly selected respondants of the Bobby Survey: If we get enough responses (100+) in the alotted time, we will give away one copy for every 20 Bobby Feedbacks completed! So, swing on by soon, and fill out this one too, please. Bobby FeedBack

Phil Lesh Interview with Rolling Stone

(updated 826/99)
Okay, sometimes we are slow on the uptake, but we just stumbled across this gem: another recent interview (May, 1999). The interview phocuses on the Phil and Phriends pshows pheaturing Phish, but touches on lots of other subjects past, present, and future, certain to be of interest to Deadheads. So, if you missed this review too, head on over to Rolling Stone and check it out!

Another New e-FeedBack is Here!

(updated 822/99)
Back to the recent past: our survey on the three Furthur tours and on The Other Ones is here; its results will be used in DeadBase XI. As with the new Jerry survey we will be giving a free copy of that book when it is published to at least one random respondent. And once again the clock is running as we hope to compile these results soon™.
A Bobby survey is still in the works, and will be posted as soon as we get everything just exactly perfect.

A New e-FeedBack is Here!

(updated 8/15/99)
We are pleased to announce the first new survey on this site in far too long. This one covers Jerry's solo performances; its results are to be featured in DeadBase XI. A new survey on Bobby's solo work will be posted within 48 hours.

Forum 9: Thoughts For Dick Latvala

Dick Latvala has Passed On

(updated 8/7/99)
Dennis McNally posted the following notice yesterday on dead.net:

August 6, 1999
"I met Dick Latvala in 1981, the new Dead biographer meeting the ultimate Dead Head. We both lucked into our dreams of serving the Dead cause, as historian and tape archivist. Dick fulfilled himself, and that is as much as almost anyone can say for themselves -- he fulfilled himself, and he was loved. By his widow Carol, by his son Richie, and by many,. many loving friends. By every Dead Head who ever listened to a CD and appreciated his passion. By the spirit of Pigpen and Jerry that he joins.
Dick Latvala, Grateful Dead tape archivist and Dead Head extraordinaire, died today, August 6, 1999, at his home in Petaluma, California. He was 56.
"May the four winds blow him safely home." (Franklin's Tower, by Robert Hunter)"

Dick Latvala is Seriously Ill

(updated 7/30/99)

Geoff Gould of the GD Forum posted the following notice yesterday:
July 29th, 1999
Dick Latvala, Grateful Dead tape archivist, was hospitalized yesterday after an apparent heart attack. Dick is in a coma in a Bay Area hospital. Please send healing vibes and prayers his way.
I will post updates as they become available.
Geoff Gould

July 30th, 1999
Dick has been like a godfather to DeadBase since its inception. He is one of the kindest, most humble people I have had the pleasure of working with. His advice, corrections, and reviews have been invaluable and it is quite likely that DeadBase would have withered early on without his support.
I urge you keep him close in your thoughts and, as Geoff said, send your healing vibes and prayers his way.
